| Lucia Y. Henry Mixed Media Artist, Art Instructor Since a young age I have been involved in the arts. I was born in Lima, Peru in 1973, and I can remember always being interested in some form of creative exploration, from short story writing to theatre custom design, or mural painting. I got a taste for arts education in the early '90's, when as an arts student, I taught drawing, painting and ceramics to young pupils at different private schools throughout Lima, Peru. My passion have always been the fine arts or “artes plasticas”, but my parents decided that graphic design was a more “realistic” career. Fortunately for me, I was taught the graphic arts in the “old school” way, no computer graphics, but watercolor illustration, figure and portrait painting, color separation (by hand!), the use of gouache, acrylics, and all of the wet and dry media of my dreams! I now enjoy continually participating in a wide range of studio art classes at different art organizations, schools, colleges, and art retreats. I have been teaching art throughout Orange County as My Arts Studio, Inc. since 2002. I opened an art school under the same name in 2005, located in Newport Beach Ca., which I had to close after two wonderful years, due to the high overhead costs. I have also taught art classes for schools and organizations such as the Irvine Fine Arts Center, Art & Creativity For Healing, Inc., the Huntington Beach Art Center, and currently teach a wide variety of drawing, painting and clay sculpture classes for the Recreation Programs of many cities in Orange County. Only for the past few years I have started to concentrate in my own artwork, which I refer to as canvas journaling, as I believe that art is the most wonderful and pure non- verbal form of self- expression. I work with a variety of mixed-media techniques. My pieces are very textural, with a use of bold colors and reflect somehow my graphic design background in the need to add text within the work, and to convey a message using lots of symbolism. My work reproduces familiar visual signs, and you may find some of my Roman Catholic beliefs rearranged into new conceptually layered pieces. A bit surreal, my work is my final interpretation of ones life's desires, fears, happiness, confusion and of course passion. I hope you enjoyed visiting my website, looking at my artwork, perhaps taking one of my classes. Lucia |
